Ina School, Village Agree On Plan

MT. VERNON – Details still need to be worked out, but it appears that Ina’s school and village boards finally have a plan to save District 8.

The Jefferson County village’s two boards met Wednesday afternoon at the Hamilton/Jefferson Regional Office of Education to review a plan by ROE consultant Charles Given – and members of both boards said the plan looks promising.

“We like the looks of this,” said Jo Ann Joy, Ina Village Board’s vice president, “and we’ll move forward with it.”

Ina Grade School Board President Brad Beaty agreed.

“I think the school board is comfortable with it,” he said.

Ina Grade School’s 82-year-old building has deteriorated to the point that officials believe pupils should be moved out. Four basement classrooms were closed years ago due to mold. The school and village boards have been trying to find a permanent solution to the problem.

The plan discussed Wednesday involves: n the school board increasing its tax levy enough to lease-purchase a six-classroom addition to the Ina Community Center.

If details can be worked out, Beaty hopes to break ground on the addition either just before or just after school starts Aug. 19, he said.
