East Tennessee School Closes Due To Mold
October 7, 2002
BLUFF CITY, Tenn. (AP) – Sullivan East High School will close for at least two weeks while health and school officials determine how to deal with an outbreak of black mold.
School officials announced Saturday that black mold, which can cause severe respiratory problems, was found in five of nine classrooms tested. Five other types of mold were found elsewhere in the 40-classroom school.
Bluff City is in far East Tennessee, about 110 miles northeast of Knoxville.
Poorly insulated cooling lines are causing the problem. The lines sweat, drip condensation into ceiling tiles and create a breeding ground for mold.
